I think it’s a good idea to clear this up once and for all. I empathise with everyone who is trying to make an impression in order to get closer to that dream job, but many of you are just doing it the wrong way.
1. Sending Facebook friend requests and messages is a big No-No. FB is a personal platform. This is a sin second only to getting your parents to call / mail your prospective employers.
2. LinkedIn is a professional platform so sending connect requests and messages is acceptable. Everyone has different policies on how they treat their LI pages so respect that.
3. The best way to send in your resume is still the old-fashioned one. Email. This is because it allows the recipient to hit a forward to the concerned person, even if it is just to put your application on record. Your email should be short, professional and accompanied by a one-page resume. If you have a portfolio to showcase, provide links. Do NOT send big attachments.
4. Remember that the person you are writing to is not your friend. They are not interested in your personal life, or your poetic musings. They are short of time, will give your mail a one-second glance and the one thing they are looking for is ‘Why is this person good for my organization?’
